Kilts form a key part of Scottish and Irish history and are worn today with pride to celebrate each country’s heritage.
Scottish kilts date back to the 16th century in the form of the Feileadh Mor or Great Kilt which was an extended length of thick fabric that was wrapped around the waist and flung over the shoulder. Kilts were worn out of necessity as protection against the harsh Scottish winters. They didn’t become a national symbol of Scottishness until after the Jacobite Risings in 1746 when the government at the time banned the wearing of kilts out of fear of another revolt.
Irish kilts are said to have been born from the Lein-Croich which was more like a tunic than a kilt. From the 1890 kilts were worn as a symbol of Irish Nationalism and Gaelic tradition. The Saffron kilt is the most popular Irish Kilt and often features Shamrock appliques on the pleats of the kilt. The Saffron kilt does not form a tartan or plaid design but is a typically a block mustard colour. The Irish tartans that do exist are made to represent the different Irish Counties. For example, people from County Galway will wear the County Galway Tartan.
Scottish tartans are different as each tartan represents a Scottish Clan or family and many Clans have more than one tartan. Historically the tartan colours were achieved through natural dyes which is why Ancient Tartans are more muted in colour when compared to Modern Tartans.
At MacGregor and MacDuff we have over 4000 tartans to choose from which include all the Irish County tartans. So no matter your Irish or Scottish heritage, we have a tartan that you can wear with pride.
